But there are plenty of affordable things to do that aren't exclusive to the elite, such as visiting extravagant mansions, appreciating fine art, relishing fresh seafood, enjoying the beaches, and exploring stunning parks and other natural riches.

Things to Do

Visit the spectacular Old Westbury Gardens, a 200-acre estate featuring a mansion filled with invaluable antiques and some of the most beautiful formal gardens in the world. Thrifty art enthusiasts can also see thousands of creations at the Heckscher Museum of Art, Parrish Art Museum, and Guild Hall of East Hampton.

History buffs can walk up circling steps and marvel at scenic vistas at Long Island’s historic lighthouses such as the world-famous Montauk Point Lighthouse Museum, a National Historic Landmark commissioned by President George Washington in 1792. Stop by the Big Duck roadside attraction for a quirky landmark that's all it's quacked up to be for selfies and architecture enthusiasts. The gigantic duck-shaped building was built in 1931 by a duck farmer to help him rise above the competition.

Nature lovers can sunbathe, swim, and surf at Long Island beaches, including the renowned Jones Beach, or hike miles of trails for striking scenery and enchanting wildlife at dozens of parks and preserves, such as the unusual Dwarf Pines Plains Preserve or the rugged Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness. If you want to see wildlife, venture to the Quogue Wildlife Refuge that houses owls, hawks, reptiles and more.

Long Island’s agricultural roots are deep. You’ll encounter fresh-picked produce at roadside stands and farmer’s markets, or you can pick your own apples, berries, and pumpkins at local farms. For a relaxing time, breathe in fields of fresh, sweet fragrance at Lavender by the Bay
