New study reveals powerful impact of sports tourism on local economy

LONG ISLAND, NY  (April 16, 2026) -  Discover Long Island (DLI), the region’s only accredited destination marketing organization, today releases a comprehensive economic impact study revealing that the Long Island Ducks have generated more than $501 million in economic impact over the team’s first 25 seasons at Fairfield Properties Ballpark.

The report, derived from Discover Long Island’s in-house data platforms, analyzed 25 years worth of data from the Ducks and found that the franchise contributes approximately $20 million annually to the Long Island economy, with more than $12 million in direct spending each year through ticket sales, concessions, sponsorships, payroll, and operations. An additional $6 million in indirect impact is generated annually through local supply chains and business-to-business activity.

Beyond the ballpark, the study estimates that Ducks fans generate roughly $15 million per year in off-site spending at nearby restaurants, retail establishments, and other local businesses, further reinforcing the team’s role as a catalyst for regional economic activity.

“Sports tourism is a powerful economic driver, and the Long Island Ducks are a standout example,” said Discover Long Island Chief Operating Officer Sharon Wyman. “We were pleased to utilize our in-house analytics and data platforms to support this analysis for the Ducks, as we are always committed to helping our partners measure and maximize their impact. The Ducks have drawn millions to the region over the years, supported local businesses, and generated significant off-site spending, reinforcing their role as both a beloved attraction and a key economic engine for Long Island.”

Since their inception, the Ducks have welcomed nearly 9.5 million fans, contributing not only to the local economy but also to Long Island’s identity as a world-class, year-round destination for sports and entertainment.

“Over the past 25 years, the Long Island Ducks have proven that our impact extends far beyond the field,” said Ducks President/CBO, Michael Pfaff. “This report validates what we’ve always believed—that every game played at our ballpark helps fuel local businesses, support families, and strengthen the fabric of our community. We are incredibly proud to have contributed more than $500 million in economic impact to Long Island, but what means even more to us is the role we’ve played in bringing people together, supporting important causes, and creating lasting memories for generations of fans. As we look ahead, our commitment remains the same: to be a trusted community partner and to continue making a meaningful difference both on and off the field.”

“This study underscores the importance of investing in and supporting experiences that bring visitors to Suffolk County,” said Discover Long Island Interim President & CEO, Mitch Pally. “The Ducks exemplify how sports can drive visitation, enhance community pride, and deliver long-term economic benefits across the region.”

The Long Island Ducks compete in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball and are widely recognized as one of the most successful and well-attended franchises in independent baseball.
