Location:
Long Island extends to over 118 miles from Manhattan to Montauk, known to be a “stone throw” away from New York City, making it the perfect home away from home. Long Island is known for its pristine white sand beaches, championship golf courses, and grand estates, as well as attracting millions of visitors to the region’s state parks and historic sites, such as Jones Beach and The Washington Spy Trail. Long Island can be considered crowded during peak summer season. The level of crowding can vary depending on where you go on the island and the time of year you visit. Plan your travels during off peak season or during the week for lower rates and less traffic.

Although renting a car is recommended and convenient, there are other options for traveling around Long Island. The Long Island Railroad (LIRR) connects with NYC and makes many stops across the Island, with lines across the South Shore, North Shore, South Fork, and North Fork—all the way to Montauk, known to locals as “The End.” Lyft, Uber, limo transportation options to Wine Country, and taxi services are available across the island. There is an extensive network of mass transportation bus routes. The bus system serves most of the island’s communities and stops at many railroad stations, shopping malls, airports, colleges, and beaches. Convenient service is provided throughout the region by the Suffolk County Transit. Service from Manhattan and Queens to the East End of Long Island is available through various transportation options, offering convenient travel for those looking to explore the Hamptons and beyond. For those seeking luxury and style, premium transportation services provide helicopter rides and luxury bus rides with added amenities for a comfortable journey.

This varies from town to town. Most downtowns do have free public parking areas; however, space is often limited. On many of the Main Streets in walkable towns there are paid parking spots alongside the curb, where you pay at the parking meter with easy card payment or via app listed below. There are also often paid parking lots with numbered spots or parking garages. Many municipal lots offer free Sundays and free spots for accessibility.

The peak of fall foliage typically occurs from late October to early November, offering plenty of opportunities for picturesque hiking and biking adventures in our state parks. Lavender typically blooms from late spring to early summer, its timing varying depending on the variety. In mid-June, English lavender takes center stage; by early July, French lavender reaches its peak; and as late summer transitions into early fall, English lavender blooms for a second time. Of course! On the rocky northern coast, Long Island Sound has relatively calm waters, inviting visitors to explore its pebble stone beaches, observe sea crabs, and enjoy some friendly stone skipping competitions. Long Island’s South Shore, especially towards Montauk, are world-renowned for the white sands and the spectacular Atlantic Ocean waves for surfing. Coopers Beach in Southampton is rated amongst the Top 10 Beaches in the nation, according to coastal expert “Dr. Beach.” At most beaches there are lifeguards during the daytime hours. The park hours and lifeguard availability vary from beach to beach, so it is best to check with the beach’s specific policies. Depending on the weather, the water’s currents strength can change. Be sure to pay attention to any important signage put on display by beach officials with information about any potential rip currents or hazards. So, if you love the water, under the watch of a lifeguard Long Island waters are safe to swim in.

Cash, cards, and Apple Pay are all widely accepted. If you’re planning a visit to Fire Island, several spots only accept cash payments, so be sure to have cash on hand.

Long Island follows suit with most of the United States when it comes to tipping culture. At restaurants and bars, it is customary to tip anywhere from 15-20% of their bill to their server or bartender. For rideshare drivers or food deliverers, 10-20%. For a coat checker, valet driver, or hotel housekeeping, a few dollars, $1-$5 per service. Please be aware that when dining out with larger parties, the tip may already be included in the final bill.
