Home to 2.9 million people today, Long Island is filled with places that bear Algonquian names—Hauppauge, Ronkonkoma, Wantagh, Mastic, Montauk, and many more. No matter your own background, understanding the complex, interconnected, and ongoing story of Native American Long Island deepens our appreciation of the place we all call home. Explore artifacts and art from Tecumseh Ceaser (Matinecock Turkey clan, Montaukett, and Unkechaug), Jeremy Dennis (Shinnecock), David Bunn Martine (Shinnecock-Montauk/Nde Daa’i (Nednai) Chiricahua Apache), Lydia Ann Wallace-Chavez (Unkechaug/Kainai Blackfoot), and many more.

Developed in consultation with an advisory panel of Native American community members and scholarly experts, “Enduring Heart” is the first exhibition at LIM to explore both the historical experiences and the vibrant artistic legacies of our region’s Native American communities.
