History of the U.S. Open
Since 1895, the U.S. Open has been one of golf's most anticipated competitions. The first match was hosted in Newport, Rhode Island, where only 11 competitors participated to secure the title of Champion. English professional Horace Rawlins was declared the winner after a 36-hole game played over the course of one day.
The next year brought competitors to Long Island for the very first time. Hosted at Shinnecock Hills, the U.S. Open had gained enough popularity among players to increase the number of those participating to 35. The winner was now Scottish professional James Foulis, and Shinnecock Hills' legacy was officially established as a staple of the U.S. Open.
The U.S. Open has grown much larger in size and scale since the original matches over 120 years ago. Today, 156 competitors arrive to the course each year to tee off and join the ranks of previous champions. Long Island has been honored to serve as the host destination for the U.S. Open ten times over the course of its history, five of them previously being at Shinnecock Hills. And now, it's returned for its sixth. Be a part of golf history when you witness this celebrated competition this summer!
