The Nautical Mile: The Foodie Destination to Pay Attention to Now

Edible Long Island, a media company telling the story of how the Island eats and drinks, is a great source whether you’re looking for a great breakfast spot, the best lobster roll and everything in between. This week, we highlight the Nautical Mile.


What to eat and drink in Freeport—right now, and even during the off-season.

Think foodie destinations on Long Island, and the North Fork, the East End, even Bay Shore likely come to mind. Outside of summer Freeport is often overlooked, but Freeport’s Nautical Mile, Woodcleft Avenue which runs along the west side of Woodcleft Canal is slowly transforming into a year-round must-visit for food and drink.

In the past year, the area added roughly six new businesses and in the 5 years since Hurricane Sandy it’s been re-imagined. You can now found everything from gourmet tacos to langusto to craft beers. Whether you’re looking for a romantic date night while watching the sun set over the water, or a place to hang with your besties or to take your folks when they’re visiting there’s a restaurant waiting for you in Freeport.

Taco Tuesdays

Opened by twenty-somethings Jessica McCabe and Jonathan Melendez in 2017, Taco Tuesdays is different than most Mexican fares. The ingredients that make up their dishes including crowd favorite shrimp tacos and the housemade beer and chicken empanadas are shopped for daily. You can also top your tacos with basically everything your heart desires—housemade avocado sauce, hot sauce, grilled pineapples—all complimentary. Remember to save room for dessert-caramel stuffed churros.

Woodcleft Crab Shack

This Nautical Mile original opened back in 1978. In the mood for a lobster roll? Or fried oysters? Or soft-shell crabs? They’ve got it all and it’s all good. There’s even a kid’s menu and a few options for those not into seafood.

E.B. Elliot’s

Another old-timer, E.B. Elliot’s recently revamped their entire menu. Tuck into a table by a window overlooking the water and let new chef Casey Kennedy wow you with re-imagined American menu with a touch of Spanish fusion. Owner Mike Danon says one of the new must-orders is the langusto with lobster and a red sauce.

Jeremy’s Ale House

Think of Jeremy’s Ale House as the Cheers of the Nautical Mile. It’s not much to look at but the place is cozy in a divvy sort of way and after one visit it can feel like everyone knows your name in the best possible sense. In addition to the 32-ounce beers served in styrofoam cups Jeremy’s Ale House puts out some incredible seafood dishes. During the warmer months the outdoor seating is a must but even in the colder months, this place is worth a visit for a low-key, no pressure, delicious day.

Take a tour of their Brew House before settling into the Taproom. While the relatively new brewery doesn’t serve food, you can order from the full Taco Tuesdays menu, served in-house. Between the friendly and knowledgeable staff, a variety of craft ales and frequent live music it’s an easy place to whittle away a few hours. Did we mention they donate 25 percent of their profits to veterans charities? We’ll toast to that.
