15th Annual Winter Festival
December 9, 2017 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Southampton, NY – The Shinnecock Nation Cultural Center and Museum ushers in this winter season with celebration and tradition. The Museum will hold its 15th Annual Winter Festival, December 9th, 11am to 4pm. This year’s event will feature a Native American arts and crafts market and demonstrations, traditional food sale, and a “Passport to Shinnecock Territory” program for youth. This is a free event, donations welcome.
Shop for a gift that is especially unique. The Festival arts and crafts market showcases authentic Native American jewelry, art, clothing and other unique hand-crafted traditional and contemporary pieces. This is a rare opportunity for buyers, collectors and the general public to meet and purchase directly from talented Native American artists.
“You can see the dedication and commitment to tribal culture in each of the artist’s work. We are honored to help promote these fellow “tradition keepers,” said Winonah Warren, President of the Board of Directors for the Museum.
A “Passport to Shinnecock Territory” will take youth on a journey through thousands of years of history. Children ages 6 to 12 can take a step back in time, while learning about the changing lifeways and environment of the Shinnecock people. The passport program will allow participants to feel, taste and touch essential elements of this vibrant living culture. From soft fur covered benches to handmade bags, bowls, clothing and food, the program tells the story of this ancient tribal community. Youth will receive their own virtual passports and stamps as they travel through time periods during each hour-long session. The program will be offered throughout the day at 11:30 am, 1:00 pm and 2:30 pm.
Sample a variety of dishes from our traditional food stand. Homemade succotash slow-cooked with cranberry beans, corn and pork is only one of the hearty winter dishes on the menu. Enjoy savory clam chowder, fry bread, and more delightful seasonal favorites.
Visit the Sweet Grass Gift Shop and choose from a wide selection of gifts, books, jewelry and more. The Museum is open Friday through Sunday, 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.
