The Inaugural Suffolk County Marathon

August 19, 2015

Get all the information here: www.discoverlongisland.com/suffolkmarathon
Residents of Suffolk County and more, with over 1,600 registered runners from all around, are ready to get stepping with the first ever Suffolk County Marathon!  The event takes place on September 13th, planned in conjunction with Suffolk County Veterans Services and a collection of other community organizations, with the proceeds gathered going to benefit veteran services in our county.  Split in to two lengths, the full and half marathons, the path of the run makes its way through the scenic towns along the stunning Great South Bay.  After crossing the finish line stick around for the Taste of Long Island Festival, where Suffolk County’s finest food and drink will be waiting for you (Runners get in free!)

Suffolk County is home to the largest population of veterans in New York State.  In addition to benefiting veterans services, and to further honor local heroes, the marathon will have a special veterans race category for all active military and retired veterans. The marathon will additionally host a “Wounded Warrior” and Paralympics component.

It all kicks off, and finishes, on the waterfront of the Great South Bay at Heckscher State Park in East Islip.  From there runners will head up the parkway and begin heading east at Montauk Highway, continuing past Byron Lake Park and Bourne Mansion.  At this point the half marathon runners will loop around and begin the trek back to Heckscher, taking a detour through the lovely Bayard Cutting Arboretum along the way.  Runners going the full distance will continue through Sayville, Bayport and Blue Point before finally turning around at Main Street in Patchogue.

This event is sure to be more than just a run.  If you’re close to a runner, bring the whole family!  The marathon bears gifts for everyone with fun along the route such as downtown festivals held in conjunction with the race, live music and entertainment, food, drink and more.  As a spectator use sponsor provided shuttles to get around it all, and make it back to Heckscher in time to see the finish.  The Taste of Long Island Festival takes place at the conclusion of the marathon and will feature live musical entertainment, highlighting our local craft breweries, award winning wines, and local food and produce. No more running after the fact; Suffolk County comes to you in this case, with free tastings for all race participants.

So prepare yourselves, the day is rapidly approaching!  Head to www.discoverlongisland.com/suffolkmarathon to find out more about the event, as well as get some information on where you can stay if you’re coming from out of town.  Interested in getting the best out of your trip?  Check out some of the Hotel Deals available during the event:
