Whether or not Long Island gets any significant snowfall this season, visitors and locals alike can still revel in the winter season by experiencing one of the region’s many ice rinks. Several of the island’s villages and public parks welcome skaters to their charming outdoor rinks like in Greenport and Port Jefferson. Several indoor rinks across the island are also open for public skating sessions too. Most are inexpensive and offer skate rentals as well as lessons for those still mastering their steps and stops. 

Whether you’re looking for an exciting activity for your family or a romantic date idea, you’re sure to make memories with this quintessential wintertime activity.  So, bundle up, dust off your mittens, and get those skates fired up because we’ve gathered the best places to ice skate this winter on Long Island.

1. The Rinx at Harborfront Park, Port Jefferson

The Rinx at Harborfront Park in Port Jefferson offers the unique experience of skating on the Harbor with so many public skate session times until the end of February.

2. Mitchell Park Ice Skating Rink, Greenport

Mitchell Park in Greenport’s outdoor ice-skating rink has public sessions Monday through Sunday at various times including private rink rentals, family night, beginners lessons, and group discounts for youths, making it the perfect setting for a day trip. And if ice skating isn’t your style, Greenport also has an indoor roller skate rink where the weather is never a concern!

3. Marjorie Post Park, Syosset-Woodbury Park, Town of Oyster Bay

The Town of Oyster Bay has so many indoor and outdoor ice-skating facilities that provide the perfect setting for residents to enjoy the winter weather. Families and children looking for a great stay-cation can head over to the rinks at Marjorie Post Park or Syosset-Woodbury Park for outdoor skating and the Town Ice Skating Center for indoor skating. 4. Tanger Outlets. Deer Park

Ice skating is almost over at Tanger Outlets! Grab your skate and head on over before or after your shopping trip to get some laps in at the outdoor skating rink. Check out their website for hours.

5. Cantiague Park Indoor Ice Rink, Hicksville

The fun doesn’t have to stop in February at this indoor ice rink. Located in Hicksville, Cantiague Park’s ice skating rink has public sessions and skate rentals. Fun fact: the rink has played  host to Olympic gold medalists such as Nancy Kerrigan who performed there in 2004, and was the New York Islanders (National Hockey League) practice facility from 1979 to 1992.

6. Freeport Recreation Center

Open all year round, this indoor ice rink in Freeport offers public sessions from October to May with Friday night teen specials and after school skates included specials. Visit their website for their hours to get your skating on this winter (and possibly spring!) season.

7. Christopher Morley Park Ice Rink, Roslyn

Located in Roslyn, public ice skating sessions at the Christopher Morley Ice Rink  run every day but Thursday until about mid-March (weather permitting).

8. Grant Park, Hewlett

Another outdoor ice-skating rink in Nassau County, Grant Park in Hewlett’s outdoor public skating sessions are going on now until March with sessions available every day but Tuesday.

9. Northwell Health Ice Center at Eisenhower Park, East Meadow

Known as the official practice facility of the New York Islanders, this state of the art facility boasts 2 NHL size rink with select public skate sessions available throughout the year.

10. Superior Ice Rink, Kings Park

Indoors and open all year round, Superior Ice Rink in Kings Park has public skate sessions, hockey, lessons, a prop-shop and skate rentals.
