Shark Week 2017 on Long Island

July 21, 2017

We’ve waited 365 days but it’s finally here Long Island — Shark Week 2017 — is back and better than ever. In honor of our favorite week of the year, we’ve gone ahead put together a list of shark-worthy adventures that are available in our backyard. Because what better way to celebrate than to get in on some of the action and you won’t have to go far to do it.

First things first, Meet Mary Lee, the Great White Shark and the (un)official new mascot for the Hamptons – weighing in at approx. 4,000 pounds, around 17 feet long and with 119,000 followers on Twitter, Mary Lee summers along the Jersey Shore and the Hamptons. Identified in fall 2012 by Ocearch, an organization that tracks marine species, experts can monitor her favorite summer hang outs which include the Hamptons, Fire Island and Montauk. Follow along for some insider tips on which beaches she will be visiting this summer.

Fun Fact: Did you know that off the coast of Montauk, experts have discovered the first North Atlantic Great White nursery!

Not adventurous enough (we get it)- how about taking a dip with a real live JAWS? The Long Island Aquarium has got you covered with a Shark Dive experience in their 120,000-gallon Lost City of Atlantis Shark Exhibit.

Feeling a little more like Captain Quint? Check out Eskimo Charters and get ready to haul in some fresh catch. Sailing out of Captree State Park, the “Eskimo Too” is a 52-foot open fishing boat that sails 7 days a week and supplies all the fishing equipment you’ll need for your next big catch.

Sunday can’t come soon enough and luckily for you if need to get a pre-shark game going you can get your fix from Long Beach’s Movies on the Beach– playing JAWS on the big screen beachside on Saturday, July 22 at 8pm on Edwards Blvd. If that doesn’t set the mood, then I don’t know what does.

Happy Shark Week Long Island!
