LONG ISLAND, NY—Valentine’s Day will soon be here and if you really want to make an impression on your true love, or new love, we’ve got some ideas beyond the typical roses, chocolate and dinner routine. Take our word for it, she’s going to love your creativity and spontaneity and you don’t even have to tell her where you got the idea.
Following are some inspirations for putting some spark into your relationship:
Climb to the top of a lighthouse. Sure it might be cold out, but all the more reason for her to get closer when you reach the top and try to steal a kiss as you’re looking out over the broad expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. The Fire Island lighthouse is open year-round, and it’s an exhilarating ¾ miles walk through the ocean dunes to get there from the back of Robert Moses State Park, Field 5. Head to Bay Shore or Babylon Village afterwards to warm up at any of the great restaurants you’ll find. Make sure to stop at Kilwin’s sweet shop in Babylon Village, making fudge, chocolate and more since 1947.
The Long Island Aquarium and Exhibition Center in Riverhead is a sweet place for a date. The aquarium is also having a ChocoVino night at 8:00pm on Feb. 10th. Chocolate + Wine = One Sensational Tasting Experience. So, what better way to spend Valentine’s Day weekend than sipping on wine, giving into sweets, and enjoying a five-course dinner. $195 per couple. Ages 21 and over. Reservations required – call 631.208.9200, ext. 426. Spend the night with the Sweetheart Sleepover Package at the adjacent Hyatt Place Long Island/East End. $384 per couple includes two ChocoVino tickets, an overnight stay, breakfast, use of the swimming pool and fitness center, parking and more.
Looking for a story behind the chocolate you give your Valentine this year. Check out the Cacao Shoppe online; a Long Island business that specializes in bean to bar authentic chocolate.
Dinner in a Mansion
You could reserve a table at one of Long Island’s Gatsby-era Gold Coast mansions. Glen Cove Mansion hosts a special event, February Wine Dinner on Feb. 10th (the restaurant is open at regular hours too). Chef Andrew Helliwell will create and host a unique, seasonally-inspired 3-course pairing menu, showcasing wines from The Mansion’s own cellars.
You could also reserve a table at Oheka Castle, the second largest private residence in the United States. Both Oheka and Glen Cove mansion also offer overnight accommodations.

Theaters and Stars
Instead of going to the big box, multiplex for a movie, why not consider taking your sweetheart to a show at one of our downtown theaters. Several of the theaters hark back to a romantic era, with gilded age architectural details and plush seating. Several also have food and bar service. The Suffolk Theater in Riverhead is a cabaret style, Art Deco movie theater located on Main Street in historic downtown Riverhead, showing everything from a Frank Sinatra Love Songs tribute to an Ozzy Tribute this month.
The historic John W. Engeman Theater at Northport has complimentary valet parking and you can enjoy the Green Room Piano Bar & Lounge and cocktail service at your seat with a show. There are also performances at several of our larger venues including the Tilles Center, the Staller Center, and The Space at Westbury.
Or take her to the Vanderbilt Planetarium, where you can sit under the simulated stars and learn about the night sky; or take in a Laser Light Show synched with rock music. You can also treat your Valentine to a romantic Valentine’s Day dinner at Eagle’s Nest, the elegant Vanderbilt Mansion, where Hollywood stars and European royalty dined with members of one of America’s most famous and powerful families.
Looking for something different, consider a Moonlight Walk under the real stars at Heckscher State Park 7:00pm on Feb. 10th. Enjoy a leisurely walk along the moonlit trails of the park. This is an excellent chance to get outside and enjoy the crisp winter air while exploring the nocturnal world of the night.
Take a scenic drive to Montauk where you can hike to the top of one of the oldest lighthouses in NYS and enjoy lunch or dinner at a restaurant in Montauk, or book a romantic getaway at a resort spa, such as Gurney’s Montauk Resort where you’ll find the Seawater Spa, featuring Roman baths, Finnish rock saunas, a fitness center, and the indoor/outdoor sand-filtered, ocean-fed, heated seawater pool. The Seawater Spa is the only authentic Thalasso Center in the continental United States and offers customized Thalasso therapies, harnessing the healing and restorative properties of the sea.
