Long Island has a long recreational horseback riding culture dating back to the gilded Gold Coast era, when residents were free to ride through most public and private property on the back of their well bred horses.
There are still hundreds of miles of public trails and parkland available for horseback riding, and plenty of stables to secure a ride or lessons.
Horseback riding along the beaches is permitted in certain areas including Montauk, at the country's oldest cattle ranch at Deep Hollow.
The horseback riding culture of days past is still carried on through the polo matches at Bethpage Park Polo Fields and the elite riding competitions in the Hamptons every year.
