And if you want to visit the Long Island resort communities on Fire Island where no cars are allowed, the only way is to take one of the six passenger ferry routes. You can also travel between the North Fork and the South Fork of Long Island through Shelter Island, at Greenport or North Haven on a Long Island ferry.
