Sunken Meadow State Park is one of those great locations that provide several habitats in close proximity. This 1,288 acre beach front park offers, the fresh water Sunken Meadow Creek that turns to brackish water as the creek enters the Nissequoque River and on to Long Island Sound. There are bluffs, fields, and upland woods, all of which makes for good bird watching all year round. Walk along the boardwalk to scan the Sound. Look for horned Grebe, Bufflehead, Red breasted Merganser, Long Tailed Duck, Common and Red Throated Loons, and White-winged Scoter. On the beach you can find Dunlin, Sanderling, Ring-billed Gulls, Great black-backed Gulls, Herring Gulls, and Piping Plover that nests here during the summer. In the fields by Parking Lots 1 and 2 look for Horned Larks, Snow Buntings, and flocks of Canada Geese. Sunken Meadow Creek can be difficult to bird watch with Phragmites and heavy brush blocking the view of the creek.
