Quogue Wildlife Sanctuary is 300 acres of pine barrens that is the head waters of Quantuck Creek, which provide several forms of wetlands. There are swamp, fresh water bog, pothole ponds, and tidal estuary. With 8 miles of trails, birding is a pleasure here. At the north end of the preserve is a section that is the unique dwarf pine Barren. This preserve also has a series of enclosures used to hold wildlife that is injured or imprinted on humans and cannot be released back to the wild. The ponds support ducks such as mallard, American black duck, the magnificent wood duck, various gulls, Great Blue Herons. On the land look for wild Turkeys, wrens, Blue Jay, Whip-poor-wills, Common Nighthawks, and this is a terrific location to observe spring and fall migrants.
