South Shore

Norman J. Levy Overlook Park and Preserve

This unique park, once a landfill, has been transformed into an environmental treasure. Located beside the Meadowbrook a fresh water stream enters into Merrick Bay. The park has a windmill that circulates water of two man made ponds at the top of the 150 foot hill that made up the landfill. The top of the hill has been planted with wild flowers such as Cone Flowers. The hill overlooks the bay and marshes and offers a spectacular view of the South Shore Estuary. Several miles of trails and a 500 foot fishing pier offer good bird watching. The park provides a jitney to transport physically challenged and elderly visitors upon request. Wading birds can be seen on the salt marsh. Waterfowl use the bay and can be seen from the fishing pier. Barn owl hunt over the park around dusk. Usually seen coming out of the nearby refuse transfer station. This is also a good spot to see Osprey. Look for many American Goldfinch on the wildflower seed heads in late summer and fall.
