In 1971 the National Hockey league awarded Long Island with their first professional hockey team. Their inaugural season was during the 1972-1973 season at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, which is where all of their home games are played. The New York Islanders have now become the most well known professional sports franchise on Long Island.
