The last home of artist/author/illustrator Esphyr Slobodkina (CAPS FOR SALE) who lived as a Long Island, NY resident for nearly half a century THE SLOBODKINA HOUSE HISTORICAL SITE AND MUSEUM offers something for everyone in the family. A tour of the facility includes a welcome and overview by Executive Director Ann Marie Mulhearn Sayer, who was a friend and associate of Esphyr for a number of years. Guests accompany Ann Marie through the upper and lower galleries as she recounts Esphyr’s fascinating life, taking questions while pointing out paintings, sculptures and children’s book illustrations dating from 1906-2002. The SLOBODKINA HOUSE is home to over 500 paintings and sculptures. Guests will visit Esphyr’s bedroom, workroom, a “mock” sewing room and view polychrome works, clothing designs, Slobodkina’s hand-made dolls, personally designed jewelry, and a collection of Slobodkina Family vintage clothing and artifacts from around the world. Many of Slobodkina’s works are collages and constructions. Integrating paint, wood, plastic, and metal with found objects, such as disassembled typewriters and computers, Esphyr created amusing and great art. Esphyr wrote, illustrated and published over 20 children's books during the 20th Century, and illustrated books by other well-known authors including Margaret Wise Brown. The museum houses first editions, drafts and versions of these books in many languages. Three original pages of her classic CAPS FOR SALE are on display. Esphyr Slobodkina was a founding member of the American Abstract Artists. Her work has received high acclaim. Esphyr Slobodkina’s paintings, sculptures, and literary works are now part of the collections of a number of museums including; The Metropolitan; The National Gallery in Washington, D.C; The Whitney Museum, Hartford, CT; The Northeast Children’s Literature Collection (NCLC), Thomas J. Dodd Research Center, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT; The Smithsonian; Long Island’s own Heckscher Museum; Hillwood Art Museum, C.W. Post Campus, Long Island University, NY; and more. The permanent exhibition at Slobodkina House is insightful and enjoyable. It traces the history of Esphyr Slobodkina and the Slobodkina Family from their Russian roots through their sojourn in Manchuria to the present day. It provides visitors with a unique experience: a chance to see and hear how one person’s journey to the United States would eventually affect the Art World and the Children’s literary world forever. The Slobodkina House was designed to educate the public about the work of Ms. Slobodkina and encourage others to pursue their dreams through awareness of her inspiring accomplishments. The Slobodkina Foundation is a 501 (c)3 non-profit corporation whose purpose it is to perpetuate awareness of the lifetime achievements of Esphyr Slobodkina.
