One of the great beach treasures of western Long Island, Nickerson Beach Park( entrance fee required) covers 3,500 feet of ocean shoreline. Its East and West Terraces, set on opposing sides of the sandy beach, offer many different activities and spectacular sights for sports games, including tennis, basketball and handball, or just peaceful mediation. Both sides feature pools with snack bars, restroom and playgrounds. Surf fishers may cast off on the east end of the beach, with a county permit.
Through a lottery process, cabanas are available (lottery fee and season rental fee), and there is a senior citizens center as well. Nature lovers can bask in the sun at the park's campground, which spans over 74 trailer sites and six tent sites with facilities nearby. Organized youth groups are welcome.
