Q. Why should I visit Long Island?

A. Long Island is a unique destination offering an array of attractions. Long Island is surrounded by miles of beaches, parks and water activities. There is history back to the Revolutionary war on the North Shore, and maritime attractions on the south shore. Vineyards, wineries and farms stands are located on eastern points of Long Island as well as the renowned Hamptons and Montauk.

Q. How far is Long Island from New York City, and how can I get there?

A. Long Island is easily accessible by car, rail or bus.  From New York City’s Penn Station, travelers can take the Long Island Rail Road to many points throughout the island.  The western part of Long Island is only 30 minutes from NYC and the eastern point is about 2.5 hours from NYC.  When taking the Long Island Rail Road it is important to find out the name of the town that is closest to a railroad station.  See our section titled “Long Island Rail Road” for a map of all the stations.
Long Island is also served by two bus companies that pick up passengers in midtown Manhattan and transport passengers to the Eastern parts of Long Island – known as the Hamptons, Montauk and the North Fork (Long Island Wine Country).

Q. When is the best time to visit Long Island?

A. Long Island has beautiful seasons throughout the year.  The most popular time to visit is during the summer because of the warm weather and beaches.  The spring and fall are just as beautiful with blossoming flowers and the autumn harvest season. During the winter, one can escape to a spa or stroll through many of our main streets or visit our idyllic beaches during this quiet time. Long Island also hosts Long Island Winterfest/ Jazz on the Vine during the months of February and March. On weekends during Winterfest, you can enjoy free jazz concerts at many of our 30+ wineries while enjoying a glass of wine. Bring your own lunch to while listening to some great music.

Q. What do I do if I have a medical emergency while I'm traveling?

A. Long Island has some of the finest hospitals in the country.  In addition to hospitals, we have emergency centers, walk- in clinics and pharmacies. Emergency attention is only a phone call away by dialing 911.

Q. Is shopping available?

A. Of course! Long Island has two major outlet centers – The Arches at Deer Park and Tanger Outlet Center in Riverhead.  Long Island also houses major shopping malls such as Roosevelt Field Mall, Walt Whitman Mall and Smith Haven Mall.  The Americana Manhasset houses major upscale retailers such as Prada, Gucci, Kate Spade and more.

Q. Do I have to have a car while on Long Island?

A. Renting a car to travel around Long Island is preferable but not required.  There are several towns that can accommodate travelers who do not have a car. Take the Long Island Rail Road to many towns including Great Neck, Long Beach, Rockville Centre, East Hampton, Southampton, Sag Harbor, Greenport, Montauk and Fire Island. They are walking towns and can be easily accessed via rail, bus, or taxi.
