Skip Navigation LinksHome > Suffolk County Culture & History > Art Museums & Galleries > Famous Artists Maybe it's the unique glimmering light here, or the bucolic east end scenery, or the close proximity to the vibrant New York City art scene, but Long Island has always been a natural magnet for creative people. Among the best known artists from the area are Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner.  Visit the Pollock-Krasner House in Springs, East Hampton, the former home of two of the country's foremost abstract expressionist painters. The artist studio in Springs requires a reservation for private tour, and visitors can walk amidst the splattered paint on the floor where the artists worked. Nearby is the cemetery where both Pollock and Krasner are buried under two large boulders.

Visit Suffolk County Art Museums and Galleries to view work by famous local artists.

William Merritt Chase opened the Shinnecock Hills Summer School on Long Island in 1891 and taught there until 1902. Chase adopted the plein air method of painting, and often taught his students in outdoor classes.

Other artists who lived and painted on Long Island include George Grosz, who lived in Huntington. Visit the Heckscher Museum to view his work. Willem De Kooning also drew inspiration from his East Hampton home, and the work of William Sidney Mount, who lived here in Setauket, can be viewed at the Long Island Museum of American Art, History and Carriages in Stony Brook. Other artists known to have stayed in the area include Jasper Johns, Max Ernst, Isamu Noguchi, and Louis Comfort Tiffany. Andy Warhol lived in Eothen, at his Montauk Estate; Stanford White lived on Long Island and is buried in a cemetery here in St. James; Abstract Expressionist Mary Abbott has a house and studio in Southampton; and Annie Leibovitz has a home in Wainscott. A full listing of east end artists and places they visited, lived and worked can be found at the Parrish Art Museum.

Visit Suffolk County's art museums and galleries along with History & Heritage museums where you'll find works by local artists, as well as world-class exhibits and displays. Join a local Arts Organization and start creating your own pieces of art.
