Long Island is bordered by hundreds of miles of clean, fine white-sand beaches along both the ocean and the bay, surrounded by secluded dunes, cliffside bluffs and lighthouses. In fact, some of the world's best public beaches are located on Long Island, featuring miles of boardwalks, beach trails, restaurants, picnic areas, and spectacular sunrises and sunsets.
Among the more than 150 beaches operated by federal, state, county and town municipalities are the gorgeous beaches of the Hamptons, along Long Island's South Fork; those along the rocky North Shore cliffs; the Fire Island National Seashore, stretching 26 miles through 17 beachfront communities and a natural wilderness area on the South Shore; and the largest and most widely-renowned of all Long Island beaches, also on the South Shore, Jones Beach.
