Lighthouses

Most people can quickly and readily identify two major Long Island lighthouses, the Fire Island Lighthouse and the Montauk Lighthouse. But after that most people, even native Long Islanders, are stumped to think of any others. As a region dependent on the sea, which has not always been kind to passing ships, the lighthouse has become a vital institution on Long Island. Their preservation has been the consuming work of concerned groups dedicated to seeing that the legacy and heritage of these beautiful structures, now enjoying a popular resurgence, get passed on to future generations.
