Long Island has a rich history of hosting major youth, collegiate and professional sporting events. 

Long Island's various universities and independent facilities have hosted such prestigious events as ECAC Men's Tennis, ECAC Swimming & Diving Championships, NCAA Men's Lacrosse Quarterfinals and Semi-Finals, Big East Swimming & Diving and FINA World Cup Swimming. 

Long Island's extensive golf history includes youth events such as the International Junior Golf Tournament (IJGT) and the American Junior Golf Tournament (AJGA).

Long Island is also proud to have been the site of seven USGA U.S. Open Golf Championships from 1896 to 2009.

Major annual sporting events include the Belmont Stakes, Triple Crown's last leg; the Mercedes Benz Polo Championships and the Hampton Classic Horse Show.
