HAUPPAUGE, NY -(July 7, 2011)- With over 400 miles of beaches, 130 golf courses, 60 vineyards, world-class museums, historic sites, kids fun parks, zoos, aquariums and more all serviced by hotels, motels, B&Bs, and inns, the Ward Melville Heritage Organization contends that Long Island is the ‘World’s Largest Resort.”
Showcasing this claim, the Ward Melville Heritage Organization teamed with area attractions, including aviation and maritime museums, the Long Island Wine Country and more to gather items that reveal Long Island as a complete 100-mile long, 30-mile wide, completely self-contained, Island-wide resort.
An exhibit, which uncovers Long Island’s ‘World’s Largest Resort’ status, will open on July 7 at the Educational and Cultural Center in the Stony Brook Village Center. The exhibit will be open 10 am to 5 pm daily through Labor Day.
The exhibit is a snapshot of the best of Long Island all in one place. There will be sand from Cooper’s Beach (voted the best beach in the country in 2010); “Eight Ball,” a 1908 S.S. #8 Class Sloop boat from the Long Island Maritime Museum and other items illustrating life as an oysterman; a wine press, grape vine and corking machine from the North Fork Wine Country.
Other items show life on the Long Beach Boardwalk circa 1910; a replica of the Montauk Lighthouse, a Scrimshaw and other items that sailors made in the late 1800’s from Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum; aircraft models from the Cradle of Aviation, items from Long Island Aquarium, a “1909 Vanderbilt Cup Race on Motor Parkway” diorama, a Long Island Motor Parkway License Plate (first EZ pass) from the Vanderbilt Museum and much more.
