In 1819 Walt Whitman, one of New York's most famous authors, was born in a small farmhouse in the rural Long Island community of West Hills in the town of Huntington. Whitman’s writings captured the spirit of the nation in the nineteenth century and examined some of that time period's most significant events including westward expansion, immigration, slavery, and the Civil War.
A popular site for field trips in New York, the
Walt Whitman Birthplace and Interpretive Center is near some of the other popular sites in Huntington, including
Caumsett State Park, the
Joseph Lloyd Manor House and the
Heckscher Museum of Art.
