famous lighthouses, long island lighthousesLong Island is known for its famous lighthouses, several of which permit visitors to venture to their perches to enjoy unparalleled ocean and island views. With over 25 lighthouses built on Long Island since 1796, Long Island enjoys a deep connection to these historic structures.

Three Long Island lighthouses feature museums and permit a climb to the top of the tower: Montauk Lighthouse, Fire Island Lighthouse and Horton Point. Montauk Lighthouse, one of Long Island's most famous lighthouses, was commissioned by George Washington and is the oldest lighthouse in New York State. The Fire Island lighthouse is on Long Island's famous barrier beach, Fire Island. And the Horton Point lighthouse, the newest Long Island lighthouse to open to the public, is located in Southold, right in the heart of the vineyards at Long Island Wine Country. Other lighthouses can only be viewed from a distance, by pre-arranged tour or by boat.
