Shelter Island

Shelter IslandShelter Island is a tiny island nestled between the north and south forks of Long Island. It can be reached via ferry from Greenport on the North Fork, or Sag Harbor (North Haven) on the South Fork. Shelter Island is known for its natural beauty, hiking, biking, bird-watching and some of the most breathtaking kayaking on Long Island. The entire island is approximately 27 square miles. Hotels and restaurants welcome visitors.

Shelter Island is considered part of the North Fork region.

Following is an area tour “snapshot itinerary.” Use any element alone, or combine it with other attractions or regions for longer stays. Ask the LICVB how to make these itineraries a reality for your group.


  • Take the ferry from Greenport to Shelter Island. Bring your bike
  • Spend the day exploring nature preserves and secluded beaches
  • Lunch in an historic hotel
  • Rent a kayak and do some more exploring on the water
