Outside of New York City, Suffolk County enjoys one of the nation's highest concentrations of arts and cultural organizations and activities. Now the Department of Economic Development and Workforce Housing, Office of Film and Cultural Affairs is partnering with the Long Island Convention and Visitor's Bureau to launch a new Spring arts festival called ArtsWave to highlight the community-building capacity of the arts by focusing attention on the events happening in Suffolk County's Main Street districts, historic districts, and landmark buildings.
During the month of May the "network of creative communities" that make up Suffolk County will participate by offering hundreds of innovative programs in film, dance, music, and theater as well as a variety of visual art exhibits. From the Hamptons to Huntington, and Babylon to Riverhead, virtually all of Suffolk County downtown districts enjoys at least one cultural anchor that serves as a catalyst for downtown revitalization efforts. Millions of dollars have been spent renovating and expanding downtown cultural facilities, generating hundreds of jobs and attracting new restaurants and shops. A recent study conducted by Dr. Pearl Kamer, Chief Economist for the Long Island Association, found that arts organizations contribute over $200 million in economic impact for Suffolk County alone. Now every downtown community in Suffolk County has the opportunity to benefit from the "arts effect".
