NYS Darren McGee, Fishing on Long Island

Suffolk County

Suffolk County has so much to offer, you’ll want to kick your shoes off and stay awhile.

Start out along the North Shore, where the winding scenic roads take you through time and history, past quaint villages and bluff-side beaches. See a Gold Coast mansion, an outstanding marine life exhibit and a planetarium all in one at the Vanderbilt Museum. Visit the home of poet Jupiter Hammon at the Joseph Lloyd Manor House, or the Walt Whitman Historic Site at the birthplace of famed poet Walt Whitman.  Visit the Museum of Long Island Natural Sciences at Stony Brook, or see the working Stony Brook Grist Mill c.1751.

Or step out to the Atlantic Ocean beaches along Fire Island National Seashore, at Suffolk’s South Shore, accessible by bridge or ferry. Climb to the top and enjoy the view at the Fire Island Lighthouse. All along the South Shore, charming villages featuring great food and shopping abound.

Central Suffolk holds its own charms, and boasts the top-rated water park, Splish Splash. Nearby Altlantis Marine World is a world-class aquarium in downtown Riverhead, featuring everything from sharks to penguins. Also in central Suffolk, enjoy spectacular outlet mall  shopping at Tanger Outlet Center, or spend the day at a wildlife park or game farm.

Long Island’s two “forks” offer two different experiences for visitors. Visit the rural, laid back North Fork, where vineyards, farm stands and charming villages welcome visitors. Over two dozen wineries grace this especially scenic portion of the Island. Visit the Long Island Wine Council at www.liwines.com for more information. Head out to Greenport to see the home port of the HMS Bounty. Go to the exclusive Hamptons on the South Fork, where movie stars, sand and surf, upscale dining and shopping are the everyday norm.

And if lighthouses are your passion, Suffolk County boasts more lighthouses than any county in the U.S., including the Montauk Lighthouse at “the end” of the Island. While in Montauk, visit the oldest cattle ranch in the country at Deep Hollow Ranch.

Whatever your interests, you’ll be glad you came to Suffolk County.
