The United States Golf Association (USGA) has served as the national governing body of golf for the U.S., its territories and Mexico since its formation in 1894, and it organizes national golf championships in the United States. These championships include the U.S. Open, the U.S. Women's Open, the U.S. Senior Open, ten national amateur championships and the State Team Championships.

Bethpage State Park features five 18-hole regulation golf courses including the world-renowned Black Course, the site of the U.S. Open Championship in 2002 and the U.S. Open Championship in 2009. Famed golf course architect A.W. Tillinghast designed and oversaw construction of three golf courses there (Black, Red and Blue) and modified the Lenox Hills Course, now called the Green Course. The Yellow Course was designed by Alfred Tull.
